Glendale Sciences and Technology School staff, students and families work very hard to support Red Deer Public Schools initiatives addressing Literacy, Equity and High School Completion.
Literacy. Equity. High School Completion.
Any local school initiative we take on must adhere to these over-arching big picture contexts. With this in mind, we "make things happen" within the contexts of supporting literacy, equity and high school completion in several ways:
- A school-wide focus and program development in the area of literacy... language literacy, numerical literacy, digital literacy, social literacy etc. To this point at Glendale we have been heavily engaged for the last two years developing and supporting language literacy in all of its forms (vocabulary, comprehension, syntax, de-coding, fluency etc.), and this year we are expanding our focus to include numerical literacy in all of its forms as well. Concurrently through classroom-based instruction and school wide programs, we are able to support literacy across the curriculum while focusing primarily on language and numeracy development.
- Our focus on equity takes several forms through projects like Empathy ReBoot, our affiliation with UNESCO's Associated School's Project Network, our Inspire Leadership student work, WE Foundation projects etc. We also work hard to provide what we call "Resiliency School Support Pathways" via school administration, counselors and learning specialist supports, and each of thes pathways offers specific support for kids who are facing challenges with any sort of social, emotional, behavioral or learning roadblock. We are very excited to announce that this year, for the first time, we have struck a school-based equity committee. Our committee consists of school staff, students, parents, members of our School Council, school administration and our learning support and counseling departments. We receive direction from the District Equity Committee and look forward to the excellent work we will do this year on behalf of our students and families.
HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION
- We believe the imperative to support high school completion begins at home in the pre-school years. We support parents and kids when they enter our school in kindergarten in a variety of ways. Primarily we try very hard to create engaging and purposeful learning environments in every class and every common space throughout the school. We also work hard to conceive and offer a wide variety of extra-curricular learning opportunities that kids can participate in based on their individual desire and aptitude. We believe that kids who are excited to come to school will want to keep coming all the way through to graduation.
- Following through where the above efforts lead off, we strive at Glendale to track our students responsibly and purposefully as they transition from grade to grade within our K-8 school. We have a luxury in the fact that we very often have the privilege of knowing and working with kids for 9 straight years at Glendale. This fact provides us with opportunities to utilize effective benchmarking strategies, learner support strategies, family connection strategies and the optimized individualized support contexts these opportunities create. We get to know our students very well during their time at Glendale, and we support them after they leave our school by sharing all of our data and information about every child who graduates or leaves our school with their target school. We collaborate willingly with any teacher or support person who works with our Glendale kids.
